Zinc

Background: 

Zinc is an essential mineral responsible for the activity of multiple different enzymes in the body! It is important for wound healing, skin health, protein synthesis, vision health as well as DNA synthesis and immune function. In fact, supplemental zinc is added into throat lozenges and many over the counter cold remedies.  

Food sources of Zinc: 

Grains/Starches: Wheat germ, fortified cereals 

Dairy/ alternatives: Yogurt, Swiss cheese 

Proteins: Liver, Beef, Oysters, clams, mussels, crab, lentils, pumpkin seeds, chickpeas, tofu 

 

Did you know 

Zinc deficiency can result in a loss of sense of taste and appetite. This is more common for people are at risk for malnutrition (i.e. elderly, anorexia nervosa, or cancer patients)
